A. J. Stephens, about 50, operator of a filling station and grocery store near the Spartanburg-Greenville ^ county line, was detained by Sheriff Sam M. Henry of Spar tanburg county. Sheriff Henry said that Stephens was brought to the county jail in Spartanburg and later turned over to two Greenville county officers. So far as could be learned last night, no formal charge had been preferred. Officers said that Owens was shot one time with a pistol, the bullet striking him in the chest. It was also stated that an argu ment over a bottle of “Seven Up” preceded the shooting. i. ne Doay was removeu to tue Petty Funeral Home in Landrum. Coroner W. H. Garrett of Green ville county said that an inquest would be held today or tomorrow. A coroner’s jury viewed the body today, in order that funeral ser vices may be held. Funeral services for Owens will be conducted at the Hickory Grove Baptist church in Polk county this afternoon at 5 o’clock. The IJev. A. T. Howard and the Rev. A. P. Jones will officiate. Pallbearers will be Herman No [ dine, Ernest Owens, LeRoy Mc Swain, Hollis McSwain and G. W. Powell.
